Caste in modern India has become a complex institution, and despite its serious critique and much adverse efforts to negate its impact continues to effect socio-economic disparities, and has decisive negative impact on human well-being. Status of women in India is also determined by hierarchical and dynamic interplay of caste, class and gender. Several studies of development through the lens of caste and gender reveal that both caste and gender inequalities are being weakened and reproduced.
Caste, Gender and Development is based on an empirical study that uses demographic and survey data, along with secondary sources to examine the socio-economic condition of Dalit women in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The study shows how throughout the course of Indian history differentials of gender have been critical in structuring over patterns of domination and subordination by colonizers, nationalists, reformers, and Dalits themselves. The focus of this book is to locate gendered inequality, inequity and oppression within the broader structures of caste and class domination, inequality and social stratification.
It is hoped that this book will provide a new and insightful perspective to the sensitive issue of gender justice in modern India through the lens of the caste system and its harsh realities. Scholars, policy-framers and development practitioners may find in it a combination of documentation of empirical research findings, detailed critical analysis and possibilities for further research.
