520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The responsibility to protect children from abuse, neglect and all other forms of maltreatment as stated in Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (crc) is indeed a very complex task – both for legislators at different levels as well as for social workers, judges and others involved in the decision-making process in individual cases. “Damned if you do and damned if you don’t” is a common way to describe the dilemma which is often posed. How to strike a balance between, on the one hand, children’s right to protection, and on the other hand, the right of children and parents to respect for family life, is difficult and challenging and there is a need for multi-disciplinary research to deepen the understanding of how best to protect children from being harmed in their own home environments while respecting fundamental human rights of both children and adults.
