520 _aThis book is in essence a collection of materials. The intention is to make them available to those interested in knowing how and why we adopted a Constitution, why the Parliament has chosen to amend it from time to time and how the Supreme Court has interpreted it, especially on the crucial areas of the rights and duties of the people and the role and functions of the governing institutions set up by the Constitution. The book does not judge the merits of the functioning of these institutions. It is for the readers to form their own views generally on the working of these institutions. More importantly, on whether or to what extent the Constitution has evolved (through the constitutional amendments made by Parliament and the interpretation of the Supreme Court) and if it has, whether such evolution has been consistent with the thinking of the eminent members of the Constituent Assembly and the text of the Constitution. A question may legitimately arise regarding the current relevance of the debates in the Assembly and in Parliament (in case of amendments) in understanding the truth of the text. The answer has been provided neither in detail nor in brief in Part II of the introduction to this book in the hope that the readers will assess whether the aspirations of the makers have been fulfilled or whether such aspirations have become outdated in the on-going social, political and economic spheres of the country. ---Lawbookshop.net
